It’s like Mazzy Star met the Cranes and replaced Hope Sandoval with Alison Shaw and out of it came Sea Lion. From Göteborg, Sea Lion is a band I know a lot of my friends would enjoy. When I found them, it was like I had found my lost treasure. I’m mesmerized by Linn Osterberg’s voice. It’s absolutely beautiful and the melodies is simply divine. I also can’t put into words how great her covers are. It’s like you’re listening to a totally different song. When everyone’s raving about First Aid Kit, they need to give Sea Lion some attention! I love this!
swedish music
Maasai – Forgive Me
Electro pop duo from Stockholm, Maasai is something you need to hear. Beautiful, dream whispery vocals combined with a lovely electro beat make this song hard to not like. Maasai is on their way to joining the rest of the Electro-pop greats out of Sweden.
Lady Banana – Wall of Cheese
A wall of cheese sounds rather delightful, and so does the song. I still don’t get why this song is called Wall of Cheese, but this is upbeat, rocky and great garage rock. Of course, this indie greatness comes out of Göteborg. As the end of the song says, I can listen to this “Again and again and again.”
Hey Elbow – Blanca
I love the dynamic sound of this song. Dreamy vocals combined with an eerie, echoing melody make this song close to perfection. Released back and May, Blanca is the debut single from Malmö’s Hey Elbow. It’s hard to believe that sound is coming from just three people. I will anticipate their full album release set to come out sometime this summer. It’s been a while since a band has gotten me this excited to hear more!
Robyn and Röyksopp – Do It Again
It’s Friday, we’ve made it through another week and it’s time to celebrate the weekend! What better way to start than with a dancey Robyn and Röyksopp song that features an uprising within in the video?
Mando Diao – Long Before Rock and Roll
Throwback Thursday again, and today to a band that I always seem to forget that they are Swedish. This could possibly because they sound like they come straight out of the U.K. But nope they are Swedish. Their sound blends elements of rock, brit pop, soul, garage rock and pop to create something great and fun. Their sassiness makes me want to dance.
Museum of Bellas Artes – Abyss
Yesterday, I posted the side project of Leo and Alice so I might as well feature the actual band they came from since their recently released a video from their single “Abyss” released last year.
Toi let – Lord of the Ring
The side project of YAST, Toi Let from Malmö is awesome. Though their name brings thoughts of bodily wastes, their songs don’t represent that at all. They recently released their EP titled “Lord of the Ring” You can check it out on SoundCloud below.
I’m really digging the guitar in their songs. I also love the shifts between songs from fast or slow to vocals or instrumental. All and all this is a pretty solid EP for a side project. Let them take you ears on a journey they will thank you for.
Samling – Natten (Eva Dahlgren re-vocal)
Last year, I tried learning Swedish along with my lovely friend Jackie. Lucky for her, she is in Sweden now and attending Swedish School. As for me, the only phrase I will remember is “Du är bäst!”
Moving on…I rarely post something in Swedish since I don’t understand the lyrics, but this is one song I can’t pass up. I really wished I knew what they were saying because the song is awesome.
School – So Long
I love School, and no I am not talking about the educational institution. I’m talking about the amazing band out of Göteborg. I wrote about School back in April when I first started my blog, but they are another band like Blessa from Sheffield that I can’t get enough of. They are also another band who puts out teasers making me want more. I was fumbling around at work trying to figure out what to listen to and I hit random and their song “So Long” came on. I know we are only half way through the years but I already know this will make my top of 2014. I am always scared to hear live recordings out of fear the band won’t sound great. But School sounds amazing. Identical to what their recordings sound like. I love it so much, I hope you can read the excitement and passion in my voice!
